So you’re considering a cruise in Europe? Do you know where you’d like to visit? Do you know how many different destination areas make up Europe? If you’re like many people, you’re faced with a lot of questions about Europe and looking for some guidance to help you make a decision about a European cruise. This first in a series of articles about European cruises will define the various destinations that are available for you.
Your cruise in Europe will be different than those that visit the Caribbean or Alaska. While you have choices on visiting beaches and beautiful cities, you’ll also visit locations that are known for their cultural sites, history and art. A European cruise will generally fall into one of the following categories:
- Eastern Mediterranean – here you’ll visit places like Athens Greece, Istanbul Turkey or Venice Italy.
- Western Mediterranean- here you’ll visit places like Barcelona Spain, Rome and Livorno Italy along with French Riviera.
- Northern Europe – you have a choice of two areas:
- Scandinavia and the Baltic’s: here your cruise ship will call on the capital cities of Copenhagen Denmark, Helsinki Finland, Stockholm Sweden, Oslo Norway, St. Petersburg Russia (a visit to this city usually consists of 2 or 3 consecutive days).
- The British Isles will include visits to London, Edinburg Scotland, or Dublin Ireland.
- European River Cruising – many of Europe’s famous cities were built along rivers as this was the primary method of conducting business. A river cruise will have you sail through the heart of Europe along famous rivers such as the Danube, Rhine and the Seine, where you’ll visit cities such as Budapest Hungary, Vienna Austria, Paris France and Amsterdam Netherlands.
On the following article, I’ll discuss the various European cities in depth to give a better idea about to see when you visit. The Eastern Mediterranean will be the first destination I’ll cover in depth, so stay tuned.
